Job Title: Behavioural Management Teaching Assistant
Do you have the resilience, patience, and compassion to support young people with significant behavioural and emotional challenges? Axcis Education in Tiverton are seeking a dynamic and understanding Learning Mentor to work with students who have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in an Alternative Provision setting. Many of the students display extremely challenging behaviour, including aggression and swearing. Position: Behaviour Management Teaching Assistant Location: Tiverton Contract: Full-time (Monday to Friday) The students at the provision are some of the most vulnerable young people in education. They often face difficulties managing their emotions and behaviour due to their experiences of trauma, and they need someone who can offer consistent support, no matter how challenging the day might be. As a Learning Mentor at the setting you will be a crucial figure in helping students learn how to regulate their behaviour, develop coping strategies, and build positive relationships. Key Responsibilities: • Providing 1:1 and group mentoring to students with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour, including those who may be aggressive or use inappropriate language • Assisting students in managing their emotions and de-escalating potentially volatile situations with a calm, composed approach • Working closely with teachers and support staff to create individualised behaviour plans for students • Building trusting, positive relationships with students, helping them feel understood, safe, and supported • Maintaining a light-hearted and flexible attitude while managing difficult behaviours, helping students feel comfortable and engaged • Offering guidance and support to students in their personal, social, and emotional development, enabling them to achieve both academically and personally What We’re Looking For: • Experience working with young people or adults, particularly those with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, or a history of trauma • Resilience and the ability to stay calm under pressure, particularly in high-stress situations • A compassionate, patient, and light-hearted approach to supporting students who can be aggressive or disruptive • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, working closely with staff to ensure the best outcomes for students • Relevant qualifications in education, counselling, or mentoring are desirable but not essential This is a challenging yet incredibly rewarding role.
