We are currently recruiting a dedicated and empathetic SEMH Specialist Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and supportive school in Bournemouth. This is a full-time, temporary-to-permanent position, offering an excellent opportunity to secure a long-term role within an inspiring educational setting.
In this role, you will support pupils with SEMH needs to overcome barriers to learning, develop self-confidence, and engage positively with their education. You will provide both academic and emotional support, working closely with class teachers and pastoral staff to deliver tailored strategies that promote pupil progress and wellbeing.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with children or young people who have SEMH or behavioural needs, ideally within a school, PRU, or alternative provision. Experience as a Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Mentor, or Learning Support Assistant is highly desirable, but we also welcome applications from those with backgrounds in youth work, psychology, or social care who have transferable skills.
Key Responsibilities:
• Supporting pupils with SEMH needs on a 1:1 and small group basis
• Assisting teaching staff with the planning and delivery of targeted learning activities
• Encouraging positive behaviour and emotional regulation
• Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils and staff
• Contributing to individual education and behaviour support plans
• Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, and external agencies to ensure consistent support
Requirements:
• Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH or additional needs (essential)
• TA qualification or relevant experience (desirable)
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• A patient, calm, and resilient nature
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil welfare
