Job Title: Special Needs Teaching Assistant (Reading)
Location: Reading
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm
Contract: Full-time, long-term
Start date: September 4th
In a vibrant and inclusive all-through special school in Reading, a new opportunity awaits: we’re searching for a compassionate, committed and quick-thinking SEND Teaching Assistant to join a team that’s warm and professional.
Here, pupils aged 4 to 19 are celebrated for their individuality. The school caters for a wide range of needs including autism, ADHD, profound learning difficulties, communication difficulties and complex medical and behavioural needs, and prides itself on delivering tailored support, creative solutions and the highest standard of care.
Your Mission
You’ll be a constant source of encouragement and calm in the classroom and beyond. On one occasion, you might be using visual aids or Makaton to help a non-verbal child communicate, whereas on another, you may be working alongside a teenager who is dysregulated and struggling to manage their behaviour. Through it all, you’ll be collaborating with teachers, therapists and other TAs to nurture progress—academic, emotional and personal.
What You’ll Be Doing
• Supporting pupils 1:1 or in small groups, adapting to different communication styles and needs
• Helping deliver lessons and learning activities in line with EHCP goals
• Offering personal care (e.g. toileting, mobility, feeding) where needed—training is provided
• Using positive behaviour strategies to support emotional regulation
• Encouraging expression and communication in a variety of forms—spoken word, signs, symbols or gestures
• Being a reliable, caring presence that students can count on
What You’ll Bring
• At least 3 months’ experience supporting children, young people or adults with SEND (can be in education, care, youth work or other sectors)
• Calm confidence in the face of challenging behaviour
• A can-do attitude, emotional resilience and a heart for helping
• Willingness to support with personal care tasks
• The ability to commit to school hours, Monday to Friday
Why You’ll Love It
Every day is different—but every day matters.
You’ll be part of a welcoming, skilled team who care deeply.
You’ll gain valuable experience, make real impact and grow professionally.
Ready to make a difference that lasts a lifetime?
Apply now and help shape a brighter future for remarkable young people.
