? What Is a Day Like in a PRU?
Working in a PRU is different from mainstream school - and honestly, that’s what makes it so rewarding. Here’s what a typical day feels like:
?? Calm but purposeful start
Staff greet pupils individually the moment they arrive. Relationships matter hugely, so mornings often involve quick check-ins: “How are you doing today?” “What do you need?” This helps set a positive tone.
?? Small classes, big support
Groups are usually around 4–8 pupils, which means you get to know each student’s personality, triggers, strengths, and goals. Lessons are shorter and more flexible to support emotional regulation.
?? Lots of behaviour coaching
Learning Mentors spend much of the day helping students manage emotions, resolve conflict, stay regulated, and re-engage with activities. No two days look the same — sometimes you’re supporting in class, sometimes stepping aside with a pupil who needs space.
?? Targeted interventions
This might include:
• anger-management sessions
• social skills work
• mentoring conversations
• tailored academic support
You often see rapid progress because the environment is personalised.
?? Teamwork every minute
Staff support each other constantly. You’re never left to manage challenges alone — radios, shared de-escalation strategies, and strong communication keep the day running smoothly.
?? Moments that matter
The best part? Small victories.
A student staying in class for a full lesson.
A pupil trusting you enough to talk.
Seeing confidence grow week by week.
