Job Title: Maths Teacher
Maths Teacher – Secondary PRU / Alternative Provision – Barking & Dagenham
£180–£240 per day | Full-Time | Long-Term | September Start
Axcis are working with a well-established secondary pupil referral unit in Barking & Dagenham who are seeking a confident and committed Maths Teacher to join their team on a full-time, long-term basis from September.
This is an excellent opportunity for a secondary Maths Teacher who wants to make a genuine difference to young people who may have found mainstream education challenging. The provision supports students aged 11–16 who benefit from smaller classes, consistent routines, personalised teaching and strong relationships with trusted adults.
Pupils may have experienced exclusion, disrupted education or difficulties linked to SEMH, behaviour, anxiety, autism or ADHD. The successful teacher will need to combine strong subject knowledge with patience, resilience and the ability to re-engage students who may initially lack confidence in Maths or education more widely.
The provision is based in Barking & Dagenham and is accessible from Dagenham, Barking, Romford, Ilford, Newham and surrounding East London areas.
About the Role
As the Maths Teacher, you will teach students across Key Stages 3 and 4, delivering lessons that are accessible, purposeful and matched to individual starting points.
Students may be working towards GCSE Maths, Functional Skills Maths or personalised numeracy targets. Classes are smaller than those found in most mainstream secondary schools, allowing teachers to build meaningful relationships and tailor learning more closely to individual needs.
You will:
• Teach Maths to students across KS3 and KS4
• Deliver GCSE Maths, Functional Skills and targeted numeracy support
• Plan engaging and differentiated lessons for pupils with varied starting points
• Help students rebuild confidence and close gaps caused by disrupted education
• Use clear routines, positive behaviour strategies and consistent boundaries
• Adapt teaching for students with SEMH, ADHD, autism and additional learning needs
• Work closely with Teaching Assistants, mentors and pastoral staff
• Track progress and contribute to pupil reviews, reports and individual support plans
• Support students preparing to return to mainstream education, further education or vocational pathways
What We’re Looking For
• Qualified Teacher Status, QTLS or strong experience teaching secondary Maths
• Good knowledge of the KS3 and KS4 Maths curriculum
• Experience delivering GCSE Maths or Functional Skills Maths
• Strong behaviour management and relationship-building skills
• Confidence teaching students who may be disengaged or working below age-related expectations
• Previous mainstream secondary teaching experience is strongly desirable
• Experience within a PRU, alternative provision, SEND or SEMH setting would be beneficial
• A calm, resilient and adaptable teaching approach
• Full-time availability and commitment to a long-term role from September
This is a rewarding opportunity for a Maths Teacher who believes that every young person can make progress with the right structure, encouragement and teaching. If you are an experienced Maths Teacher looking for a long-term role within a supportive secondary PRU in Barking & Dagenham, apply today to be considered.
