A welcoming and inclusive primary school in Poole, Dorset is seeking an experienced 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant to support a Reception-aged pupil with ASC from 1st October 2026. This is a rewarding opportunity to work closely with a young pupil at an important stage of their development. The school is looking for someone who is calm, nurturing and proactive, with a good understanding of autism and experience supporting children who are non-verbal or have significant communication needs. About the Role As a 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant, you will: Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a Reception pupil with ASC Support a non-verbal pupil with communication, interaction and engagement Help the pupil access the EYFS curriculum through structured and play-based activities Use visual supports, communication strategies and consistent routines to encourage understanding and independence Support sensory needs and emotional regulation throughout the school day Build a strong, trusting relationship with the pupil Encourage communication, social interaction and positive engagement with peers Support transitions, playtimes, lunchtime and daily EYFS routines Adapt activities and learning opportunities according to the pupil's individual needs Work closely with the class teacher, SENDCO and wider school team Monitor progress and provide feedback to help inform ongoing support strategies The Ideal Candidate The school is particularly interested in candidates who have: Previous experience supporting children with ASC – essential Experience working with non-verbal children or pupils with complex communication needs Previous experience within EYFS, Reception or primary settings Knowledge of autism, sensory needs and communication strategies A calm, patient and nurturing approach The ability to remain consistent and proactive when supporting challenging situations Excellent relationship-building and communication skills A genuine passion for supporting children with SEND The ability to work collaboratively as part of a supportive school team Experience with PECS, Makaton, visual communication systems or other alternative communication approaches would be highly desirable.
