Job Title: SEND Teaching Assistant
Location: Poole, Dorset Start Date: November 2026 Hours: Full Time, Term Time Only Pay: £95–£105 per day, dependent on experience Are you an experienced SEMH professional with a passion for supporting vulnerable children and helping them overcome barriers to learning? Axcis Education is working in partnership with a highly respected specialist SEND school in Poole to recruit experienced SEMH Teaching Assistants, Behaviour Mentors and Pastoral Support Professionals for a November 2026 start. The school supports primary-aged pupils with EHCPs relating to Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Many pupils also have ASC and have experienced significant barriers to learning. The school has a nurturing, relationship-based approach and places a strong emphasis on building trust, developing emotional resilience and helping pupils feel confident and successful in school. This role would suit someone with a background in SEMH, behaviour support, youth work, children's residential care, mentoring, pastoral support or alternative provision who is looking for a rewarding role within a specialist setting. The Role Providing 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH and ASC needs Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils who require consistency, patience and understanding Supporting emotional regulation and implementing appropriate behaviour and trauma-informed strategies Acting as a positive and consistent role model throughout the school day Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviour calmly and professionally Working closely with teachers, therapists and pastoral staff to provide personalised support Encouraging engagement with learning and supporting pupils to achieve their individual targets Promoting confidence, resilience, independence and positive outcomes The Ideal Candidate Has strong experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs Has worked as a Behaviour Mentor, Youth Worker, Teaching Assistant, Support Worker, Pastoral Practitioner or in a similar role Understands trauma, attachment and the reasons behind challenging behaviour Is calm, patient, resilient and solution-focused Is confident using behaviour support and de-escalation strategies Can build strong professional relationships while maintaining clear boundaries Is passionate about helping vulnerable pupils overcome barriers and succeed Holds GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Maths Relevant qualifications or degree-level education would be desirable What the School Offers A highly supportive and experienced leadership team SEND and SEMH-focused training A welcoming and collaborative staff team A well-resourced specialist environment Ongoing professional development opportunities The opportunity to make a genuine difference to children's lives Potential for long-term and permanent positions This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Mentor or Pastoral Support professional looking for a rewarding new role where relationships, consistency and compassion are at the heart of the work.
